anouka started a year ago with her first sets on soundcloud and the response was incredible, building her fan base consistently. her debut ep traveller is released on soso, the label that she runs together with zusammenklang and oliver schories. the ep reflects what anouka always tries to express in her sets: showing that melancholy and happiness are very close together and they can work harmoniously. she recorded the vocals for both tracks by herself, which was challenging yet very rewarding. frequent traveller kicks things off nicely with its melancholic moodiness shining through as we meander effortlessly through berlin inspired melodies, while the sultry vocal sits wonderfully on top adding an extra layer of depth. christopher schwarzwalder is on remix duties, and from the off creates tension as this atmospheric rework subtly growls as it grooves. its sparseness is the key here, as this restrained gem works its magic. liberty is next as it tinkles away, creating a warm glow, and its caressed with its spoken french vocal, creating an air of sophistication. and rounding things off nicely is the midas 104 remix. this mystical touch up takes the energy levels up a notch, but increases the melancholy further and adding an air of just the right amount of wonkiness and quirkiness.

opener equilibrium two from buitendijk is a perfectly streamlined and serene bit of spaced out, hypnotic techno. gentle synth pulses roam about the airwaves, left and right, up and down, as ethereal pads glow behind. it s heady dancing music, whilst liem s contact is also perfectly aimed at both head and heel. it is full of lick synth pulses that bubble and boil as watery droplets and ticking hits also colour the most subliminal groove. closer this is all you need is a more textured, frazzled cut with frosty lines and rickety pads working you into a trance. rich drums and clever bass filtration add dynamics and tension and so like everything else here the end result is hugely captivating.

a highly regarded producer and musician who used to be in the midst of the ny metro breeding reactor that spectatuclarely revived and modernized disco and italo disco since the turn of the century and added some hotliped live brass to their platters and whose sought after releases under his own appear appear much to rarely dons his house cloak and dagger for 3 sneaky new chapters on story. not wasting any time on unnecessary nicety the a-side track will send up a whole colony of ants right up your pants riding on a steamrolling percussive disco groove garnished with cut up vocals and fx trickery. b2 is another chicago style wedding of disco and house with a jubilant, string backed female vocal snippet tweaked over a heavy groove while the first track on the flip is a subterrenean, groaning dub house affair that reminds of a slowed down john ciaffone banger. no matter which chapter you jump to here it puts you right into the action.

wrapping up a short summer break, speicher returns with a powerful double bill from rising duo hunter/game. its the italian producers second contribution to the series, after having amassed quite a few nods with sneaky club anthems hexagon and bermuda (kompakt extra 83). this was followed by their strong rework of wevals gimme some a much acclaimed highlight of our total 15 compilation (kompakt 340 cd 125). the new material sees them digging even deeper into the hardware circuits while cranking up the momentum a notch or two: opening banger adaptation doesnt feel the need to ease you into the experience, dropping you right in the middle of its frenzied staccato synth throb instead. meanwhile, the path opts for rich, saturated colors and epic melodies, slowly building its case until its ready to blow its lid. these are two extraordinary techno tunes that will command your attention and leave no floor unturned an essential release for both the label and the artists.

amsterdam native mr mendel continues to churn out top notch edits at a steady pace in between crate digging and gigs around the world. this second 12 inch for basic fingers is a welcome follow up to his previous release which featured fela & gil. on release no.28 he s dug even deeper than last time and found not one, two or three but four absolute killer songs to take his razor sharp blade to. no messing around, mr mendel aims straight for the top with these joyful disco cuts.

moscow label grow continues in fine creative form, seemingly not sticking to a motive or trend but rather concentrating on the strength of character within the music it releases. for the labels eighth release the artist is berlin based the marx trukker, who over the last 10 years has been developing his very distinct sound and recent output on labels like pluie/noir, the untold stories, and most recently noorden, have all been especially impressive. now on grow comes the 4 track vinyl * heavens crackling*, from the title one is expecting something awesome, and the album does not disappoint, right from the off, the first track: * a time well spent*, begins with celestial tones ringing out and the performance develops with great synth work, enlightened and very enlivening, spring is in step and something is beginning. the record continues at such a level throughout, overflowing with rich tones, warmth, and raw sounding percussion. in the second track, * all the boating still a tide to go*, deep warm bass and strings reverberate, as if amidst a hot harbours summer, then the ethereal synths return as magical breezes of cooling wind on a june day. on the bside comes the title track * heavens crackling*, the tone has cooled, there is an autumnal vibe, extended tones of an eerie but reassuring nature provide the ground, from under which a molten bass flows playfully. the final track, * i do anything but its so cold*, as the title would suggest, again time has passed, gone are the warm relaxed echoes of the the opening tracks, winter has come, and a strong percussive energy becomes the driving force of an especially deep and more introverted last track. in heavens crackling there is an uncanny understanding of time passing and representation of being, its present in the patience and performance within every track, and the effect of the album, which seems, like the seasons, to naturally come full circle, is for the listener indeed to experience a time well spent. top marks for the marx trukker!

shlomi abers new 12inch slides perfectly into the nonplus catalogue with two slabs of straight up no nonsense techno. with well over 15 years of production history and 20 years of djing across the globe he knows exactly what it takes to move a dance floor. israel born and raised but heavily influenced by the old detroit techno movement shlomi managed to balance his roots into the modern wave of the current techno peers. working from an aladdin s cave of analogue gear he crafts a raw and groove laden sound often attempted but rarely achieved by others. takeover and street works are two tracks demonstrating hes a producer whos mastered his craft and is at the top of his game right now.

finally, leftback s own dudley strangeways rounds off the ep is his usual style, which cannot be described as anything less than true quality. as ever, black key have excelled in delivering a package which ticks all the right boxes, this is a release which will undoubtedly appeal to a diverse range of house music fans who appreciate a rather large nod to the underground. vinyl only.
